The Lookout Tower, is situated on the beach, and built to house a life boat on the ground floor, with the top floor of the tower being used as the ‘Lookout’, to spot boats in trouble at sea.
Flood recalls the fate of nearby Dunwich, which was a thriving international port, until it was swallowed by the sea during a huge storm in the middle ages. A local legend says that, at certain tides, church bells can still be heard from beneath the waves.
Shipping News at Aldeburgh Lookout Tower
Downstairs inside the Lookout, an abandoned interior, covered with dust sheets, was illuminated by a video projection of the ebb and flow of the sea, and the sound of the ‘Shipping Forecast’ could be heard over the waves, referencing the historic use of the building.
